The following information for choosing Greenland Paddle specifications is just a guide.
What works best for a particular paddler and kayak and paddling style is very subjective and
therefore best determined by experience.  But this information will get you started.
1. Pick a Style or color combination from the Paddle Gallery   If you see a
paddle in a photo on the Paddle Gallery page that you like, you can indicate
the number here and I will try to match the color shades  and combinations
as best I can,  but I am  limited by the wood available at the time.
Type in the photo number.
2.  Paddle Length
While keeping your feet flat on the ground extend your arm above your
head and measure the distance from the ground to the point where
your fingers would just curl over the top or the paddle tip.  This may be
about 80 to 90 inches.  If you are paddling a double or an especially
wide kayak let me know and I will adjust the length accordingly.
You can also choose the 72 inch
storm paddle which some people like
to carry as a spare.
3.  Loom Length
Stand straight with your arms hanging naturally at your sides, bend
your elbows to 90 degrees so your forearms are parallel to the floor
and position your hands as if you were holding a paddle. Then
measure the distance between the outsides of your hands.
Approximately 17 to 24 inches.
4.  Blade Width
The GP blade width at the tips should be small enough for you to hold
onto comfortably while rolling or bracing.  A good way to determine the
width is to form a C with your thumb and index finger and measure the
hight of the opening.   Usually between 2 3/4" and 4".  If you are ordering
a GP with horizontal laminations you can select a paddle width up to 3
1/2".    If you are ordering a GP with vertical laminations you can select a
width up to 4 ".
5.  Blade Tip Shape
You can choose the tip shape you like best.  Half circle, roundish,
Squarish, or Square
6. Blade Edges
Rounded edges are recommended for most paddlers.  Blunt rounded
edges are more forgiving of paddling technique.  They are less prone
to flutter and make rolling and bracing easier.  Sharp edges are quieter,
and are preferred for racing since they provide more bite.
7. Loom Cross-section
Form an "O" with your index finger and thumb and measure the
opening.
You will probably get a measurement of about 1 1/4" by 1 1/2".  This
would be your loom cross-section measurement.
8. Paddle Flexibility  (soft, medium, or firm)
For a paddle that is especially easy on your joints and muscles you
might choose soft, but if you are a more aggressive paddler you would
probably want to go with a firm paddle.
Vertical
Lamination
9. Vertical or Horizontal Laminations
The main difference is the visual effect, but with vertical laminations you
have the option of adding hardwood edges
.  See options below.  Vertical
laminations also provide a slightly stiffer paddle.
10.  Shoulder
A GP with no shoulder might be best if you  paddle boats of different  beams.
Some people like a shouldered blade because it helps to find the proper
orientation of the paddle to the water without having to look, for others it's
just a matter of aesthetics.
